Heroes and Friends: My Trip to the 2007 Ligonier National Conference
My time at the 2007 Ligonier National Conference will be an experience I will always remember. As far as conferences are concerned, this was the best I have ever attended!
First of all, I want to say how impressed by the diversity of the people at the conference. There were many different races, denominations, and ages represented. It was so refreshing to be among people who -despite their diversity- were unified because of the Truth and not because they were trying to cast off the Truth in the name of unity!
It was also a great time because I was able to attend the conference with one of my best friends, pastor Joe Driver of Carrollton, GA. Though we are great friends, we don't get to see each other very often due to distance and the fact that he and I are busy people. The past few days were a great chance for us to get caught up on things and spend some time discussing the things of God.
Being able to sit under the teaching of a few of my theological heroes was awesome! Seeing them on TV and listening to their CDs is okay, but it was really cool to see them up close and in person! I was able to meet John MacArthur and get his autograph during a book signing event. That meeting in itself is something I will always remember and I'll probably post a separate article about that meeting at a later date. Also at the book signing, I was able to speak with Dr. R.C. Spoul Sr. and get his autograhp as well!
At times I was overcome with emotion to be in the presence of the men whom God has used to teach me theology and also to encourage me in so many ways. Their steadfast devotion to the teaching of God's Word makes them true heroes of the faith as far as I'm concerned. If you ask me, the world might be a little better off if more people looked to faithful men of God as their heroes instead of ball players, rock stars, and immoral Hollywood personalities.
Overall it was great to be among heroes and friends...!
(Tim Challies was at the conference and has posted some articles about the messages on his blog. I recommend checking out his archives on the conference.)
Soli Deo Gloria!
