Finally, a few Modalists who don't mask their heretical views like T. D. Jakes or Tommy Tenney. For all you who think Oneness Pentecostals are just Christians with a differing opinion on a difficult topic, pay careful attention to this video and then read this book!

Modalism: Time to Take a Stand!

Sometimes Christians who are zealous for Biblical truth and sound theology, will "draw a line in the sand" and declare that a certain teacher or ministry is "heretical". When that happens, you can be sure that some well meaning Christians will get their dander up and scold that brother for taking such a firm doctrinal stance. You can do many things in Christendom today, but using the word "heretic" to describe a popular minister is not one of them!

Take for example Tommy Tenney and T.D. Jakes. These men are very popular within Pentecostal and Charismatic circles. Jakes is especially popular among African-Americans. Several years ago, when I was a minister in the Church of God of Prophecy, I actually read two of Tenney's books. However, what I didn't know then (and what most people don't know now) is that both Tenney and T.D. Jakes knowingly embrace a damnable heresy known as "Modalism" -sometimes refered to as "Sabellianism". Both of these men are "Oneness Pentecostals". That's right! These men deny the Trinity!

Instead of exposing and condemning these men and their heresies, many modern Trinitarians -who are for the most part ignorant of the implications of the Modalist heresy and the fact that has been condemned by the church for around 1800 years- don't see any problem with listening to these men preach, or attend their conferences, or reading their books.

After all, some might say, "T.D. Jakes preaches with such fervor" or "Tommy Tenney's God Chasers book was such a blessing to me". Sadly, in our day, discernment is at such a low that any heretic will be received with open arms just as long as he has a television ministry or was able to secure a big book deal.

T.D. Jakes' own website exposes his Modalism:

"God -There is one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect, and eternally existing in three manifestations: Father, Son and Holy Spirit."

In Christian orthodoxy, God is understood as described in the Athanasian Creed -that God is One and yet three Persons. The use of the term "three manifestations" is clearly Modalistic and also espoused by the United Pentecostal Church.

Tenney is harder to pin down. I can find no doctrinal statement on his website, however, his Modalism and other aberrant teachings have been documented by the Christian Research Institute.

How serious is this heresy?

Let me put it like this: Until I see that these men have openly repented of, and forsaken, their Modalistic beliefs, I will forever consider them heretics and outside of the Body of Christ. Sadly, many a modern Christian would be terribly offended for me making a statement such as this...

Christians who would never invite an unrepentant pornographer, a thief, a drunk, or a pedophile to teach in their church, will blindly embrace and sit under the preaching of people who believe and teach the Modalist heresy! Why don't Christians see that this heresy is just as serious -if not more serious- that the sins I have just mentioned?

Some may think I'm being too dogmatic over this issue... "After all", someone might say, "the Trinity is one of those mysterious things we may never fully grasp in this life". And I agree. However, there's a big difference in not understanding everything about a difficult theological concept, and conscientiously embracing doctrines that are opposed to the historic and orthodox understanding of the Trinity. Though Jakes and Tenney may sound somewhat orthodox and be commonly accepted in today's Christian world, these men are every bit as poisonous as Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons.

A more important question to consider is where exactly did the Apostle Paul draw the line while writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit?

To the Galatians, Paul took a stand against those who taught that a person must circumcised in order to be saved -a seemingly insignificant doctrinal issue when one considers all the heresies that are prevalent (and totally acceptable) in our day!

Dr. James R. White recently composed a satirical letter that reflects the attitude of Christians in our day, especially those who will baulk over my refusal to accept Jakes and Tenney as brothers in Christ:

Dear Paul:

In reviewing your letter to the churches of Galatia, we, the modern men of the 21st century, have come to the conclusion that you truly missed the point in your very pointed and, may we say, unloving comments regarding the faithful brothers with whom you had but a minor theological difference. We are in particular offended that you would identify men who clearly confess faith in Christ and who have risked their lives for their faith "false brethren."

Who are you to make such a harsh judgment, in light of their many evidences of faith? These men are Christians, and to call them false brethren is a serious sin! You are bearing false witness against them! And to dare to read the intentions of their hearts so as to say they were "sneaking" into the fellowship is simply beyond the pale. You should be ashamed of yourself! All you disagree on is a minor point of theology! They believe in Christ! They believe in His resurrection! They simply believe one should be circumcised so as to be a part of the covenant people of God!

How narrow of you to exclude them from the fellowship of faith simply on the basis of such a minor thing as this! Why won't you focus upon the areas of agreement you have? Why focus only upon differences, the negatives? Don't you realize you will never win people to your views if you continue to act in this fashion? We seriously request that you apologize to the faithful brothers you anathematized in your ill-advised letter to the churches of Galatia. By this, true peace and unity might be achieved!

Paul took a stand against legalism. If we won't take a stand on something as essential as the doctrine of the Trinity, we should be ashamed of ourselves.

Unity at the expense of truth is no virtue -nor is it Christian!

Who's the REAL Hate Group??

A few weekends ago, I was doing some searching on the net. Somehow I came across the website of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The SPLC was founded by Morris Dees and Joe Levin, in order to work for "civil rights" during the 70's. In addition to tracking hate groups, these days the SPLC is into promoting "tolerance" -and apparently, destroying anything that's good and moral in the world also....

As I was looking around their website, I saw something that disturbed me: on their "hate map" and on a page listing hate groups active in 2006, they have a ministry known as American Vision listed as a "general hate group"!!

When I saw AV listed, I really got concerned! I mean really, American Vision (AV), a hate group? What are these people smoking!!?? I've read books by AV's president, Gary DeMar; I've read AV's monthly magazine from cover to cover for 6 months; I read their daily emails; and I even have a 12 part DVD series featuring Gary DeMar speaking on eschatology, but I have NEVER seen one sentence that would lead me to think that the folks at American Vision hate anybody!

I suspect what draws AV fire from the SPLC is their firm stance against abortion, homosexuality and the godless worldview embraced by Liberals in America. AV is no hate group. All I can see from coming from them indicates to me that they are a Christian ministry dedicated to the truth of Scripture, therefore, I suspect that's why the SPLC fears their ideas so much.

You see, though the SPLC may do some good by tracking real hate groups such as the KKK and Neo-Nazis, I think time will show that the SPLC is going to increasingly focus it's attention upon Christian groups -and individual Christians- who take a firm stand upon the teaching of Scripture, morality, or a propose politically incorrect view of American History.

If you ask me, it appears as if the the SPLC has appointed itself to be America's thought police. So, watch out, if you or your organization doesn't subscribe to their popular liberal, Socialist agenda, you are fair game for a spot on their "hate map" and an "intelligence report" being sent to law enforcement with your organization's name on it.

The SPLC's libel of American Vision has been addressed in an article by Gary DeMar. In that article he writes:

"American Vision must be doing something right. We have been targeted by a number of anti-Christian groups because of our stance on homosexuality. We find ourselves in the company of Focus on the Family, American Family Association, Alliance Defense Fund, Coral Ridge Ministries, Concerned Women for America, Family Research Council, Family Research Institute, and other pro-family groups. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), run by its co-founder Morris Dees, has listed us as a “hate group” under the “other” category on their website. In fact, if you add up all the people in America who support any of the above ministries, the number would be in the millions."

American Vision is not the only benevolent group being labeled/libeled a "hate group." The SPLC even seems to be be setting it's sights the Sons of Confederate Veterans -an organization to which I personally belong-which is no hate group, but rather an honorable organization dedicated to "the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved."

Granted, I cannot personally vouch that all 30,000+ members of the SCV are free from racist attitudes (nor could I vouch for that with all the members of the Southern Baptist Convention, the NAACP, or the Boy Scouts!) but I do know that as an organization, the commitments of the SCV have nothing to do with hate or race, but everything to do with heritage and preservation of history (for the record, the SCV has "non-white" members!).

Pastors, don't dismiss the SPLC threat too quickly... I can almost assure you that the SPLC is lobbying Congress to ensure your sermons about homosexuality will soon be labeled "hate speech." If that happens, you can spend time behind bars for simply teaching what the Bible says about homosexuality or other sins that are in vogue these days. You see, the SPLC doesn't want to lynch people. No, no, there's not enough money to be gained from that! The SPLC only wants to raise lots of money, file civil lawsuits, and eventually have everyone put in jail who violates the "tolerant" worldview that they want everyone to be subjected to...

The bottom line is this: The SPLC is fueled by an anti-Christian Liberal agenda and will stop at nothing to silence anyone who believes the Bible too much, waives a Confederate Flag too high, or believes that a family consists of one husband, one wife, and "2.3 children." I believe in time to come -unless the Lord grants a great revival and turns the tide of things in the U.S.- Christians in our nation may increasingly find themselves the targets of harassment from secular thought police such as the SPLC.

(I originally posted this article on my Confederate Chaplain blog. I checked the hit counter a day or two later and I found that my blog had been visited by an SPLC computer in Montgomery, AL.!! I'm sure this article got their attention, so don't be surprised if you see Rhett's Rants and The Conferate Chaplain listed on an SPLC "Intelligence Report" in the near future! The way I see it, if the SPLC has enough time on it's hands to be tracking somebody like me, then I reckon there's not much real hate left in the world afterall!)

2 Peter 3:9: Does it defeat Calvinism?

Dr. Jerry Falwell has now declared that the Reformed doctrine of the Atonement is heretical. As my pastor has pointed out on the Reformed Mafia blog, Falwell must then include Baptists such as Spurgeon, Gill, Fuller, Carey, Dagg, and Boyce as heretics as well.

One of the main proof texts people like to use to attack the doctrine of Particular Redemption is 2 Peter 3:9 which states "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."

Does this text overthrow Calvinism? Or could this passage -when take in context- actually be further proof that the Reformed view is actually the true teaching of Scripture? Please watch the YouTube video below for an eye opening exegesis of the passage.
